5 TRENDS YOU NEED THIS SUMMER

5 TRENDS YOU NEED THIS SUMMER

Words by Alyce Cowell

Summer is a bit like that hot date you have on Friday night: you want to look your best while wearing minimal clothing, and as per usual, you have absolutely nothing to wear.

Unlike winter, with all of its layered coats and tights and over the knee boots, summer is a LOT more restrictive. Figuratively speaking. There’s only so much you can do with a tank and pair of denim shorts.

This year though, we’re noticing a few key trends come through that were truly born for summer. Add these five pieces to your wardrobe, and you’ll not only be set for the entire season, but you might just score a hot date for Friday night too.

THE SLIDE ...

Don’t get me wrong, sneakers and strappy sandals are great and all, but in summer they can be a liiiiiiiiittle hot / annoying / tight / time-consuming. When there’s ice-cream to be eaten, ain’t nobody got time for dat. Slides on the other hand, are the ultimate shoe. They take 2.5 seconds to put on, work with any outfit you throw at them, and can be kicked off with ease as soon as you sit down to relax with an Aperol spritz. I mean, what more do you really want? A free holiday??

THE WRAP-UP PARTY DRESS (TRY THE REALISATION PAR DIANE OR ALEXANDRA)...

This style is the one to watch in 2017; it’s like the deconstructed shirting trend and the off shoulder neckline got together to create the cutest little party dress lovechild of all time. It hits on all the best trends we’ve been loving lately, and couldn’t be more perfect for, well, any plans you have all summer really (weddings, girls nights, fancy outdoor events, a trip to the corner store etc etc).

THE BOY DENIM JACKET...

How does that old saying go? Jackets come and go but denim is forever? Of all the outerwear we accumulate through life, the denim jacket is a mainstay.

But there are variations… oh, are there variations. This season for example, is all about the oversized belted jacket that looks like it’s come straight from your boyfriend’s wardrobe. And nothing says off-duty supermodel quite like something that looks like it’s come straight from your boyfriend’s wardrobe, right?

THE BARE SHOULDER SHIRT...

Because we’re so obsessed with all things shirting and off the shoulder (see item #2) the Fashion Gods have gone and given us another hybrid to work with. The bare shoulder shirt is like a party on the top, business on the bottom, and is the cheekiest little trend that’ll bring your wardrobe into the now. Ditch all your other shirts ASAP.

THE SUMMER JUMPSUIT...

Who doesn’t love an easy throw-on when it’s a trillion degrees outside? The summer jumpsuit is just like a regular jumpsuit, only better! Why? It leaves your shoulders bare to catch those sweet rays of sunshine, it’s tapered through the body to fit perfectly around the important bits, and it’s cropped in the leg – a feature we’re pretty sure is built in for dipping your ankles in the sea… and showing off those pretty little slides, of course.

BARE YOUR SHOULDERS

BARE YOUR SHOULDERS

The off-the-shoulder top is no longer a trend, it's a wardrobe essential. The top is flirty, flattering, and hides your pit stains–what more could you want from a single article of clothing?

It is no surprise the trend has re-surfaced. Think: Lucille Ball, Brigitte Bardot, Natalie Wood and Grace Kelly — the original collarbone queens - movie stars of the 50's. These women collectively proved that a parenthetical swoop of fabric from shoulder to shoulder could magically make your décolletage look like the best thing since sliced Bread.

However the shoulder look is no new invention. It started as a niche market (circa 2014) and has now gone from trickle to torrential. They are everywhere. On Instagram. On every page of every magazine. On mannequins at Kmart. On my best friend. On my best friend’s mum. Wearing one no longer felt like a secret handshake between me and my personal style; it felt like peeing in a communal bathroom at RnV.

Social media has destroyed the possibility of a trend remaining fresh for more than a few months and now I need to ask myself what the neck am I going to wear on my upper half this summer?!

Scrolling through the internet type 'next big trend' has got me no where and every fashion magazine I pick up brings me back to the shoulders. I have come up with a list of my own to help those in need;

1. Bell-sleeves are definitely a viable antidote to off-the-shoulder addiction. I think I’m finally ready to take on summer.

2. One Shoulder - one shoulder covered, one shoulder mooning the world like a toddler at bath-time.

3. Tie up shoulder sleeved tops - wrap it like its their birthday.

As for the pile of off-the-shoulder tops in my closet? I’ll hang on to them for now.

4 ITEMS YOUR WINTER WARDROBE NEEDS NOW!

4 ITEMS YOUR WINTER WARDROBE NEEDS NOW!

I get super excited as the temperature drops as that means I can reach for all of my winter wardrobe essentials. Hello, long lined coats, textured knits and coloured fur.

This winter there are some pieces that I can't get enough of. Here are my favourites that ill be wearing all season long.

1. FUR

I love that a little fur can work for just about any occasion. For the day, it looks great with your favourite denim, thrown over a tee or at night, it's the finishing outerwear to your little black dress or slim line pants.

My favourite is fur is unreal. Stocking many different colours and shades these guys have you sorted for ANY occasion.

2. KNITWEAR WITH A TWIST

It's no secret that knitwear is a great staple every winter, but this winter it's all about the detail. I am loving knits with exaggerated sleeves and ruffles, cut-out details, and thick textures. My favourite neutrals, grey, black and tan always hit the mark.

3. 80's SPORT

Oh yes, 80's sport is back. Think exaggerated shoulders,  pops of neon and bold patterns. I love elevating these sporty styles with leather, pointed boots and metallic accessories.

4. TEXTURES! SILKS & VELVETS

And finally I can't get enough of silks.  Silk dresses and cami's are elegant and easy to wear. They are the perfect layering piece in winter as we love wearing them over our favourite white tee or under our FUR.

Then there is velvet. Love it or hate it, it's back.

So next time you're out and about searching for your next Winter staple make sure you consider the above MUST haves.

MUCH LOVE

X

WARDROBE STAPLE - DENIM

WARDROBE STAPLE - DENIM

There is no more important wardrobe staple than a great pair of jeans, right?!

Most of us have dozens of pairs (most likely too many) tucked away in our wardrobe.

Distressed, busted at the knee, flared or high-waisted, whatever your style wear this season's denim with timeless tones, tan, khaki and white to achieve your best chic look.

 THE SKINNY

Yes, skinnies are predictable but we can't deny they are the one style of jeans that can take you from day to night in a heartbeat. They are also the most flattering jeans you can find; they suit skinny to curvier-shaped girls. Yes, you curvy women that think you can’t wear skinnies, you need to. They slim out thighs, and they draw attention to your calves, which is normally our leanest body part.

We love wearing our skinnies with an oversized shirt; it’s all about creating that balance. Ankle boots, pointed heels, loafers or ballet flats are also my go to. We recommend you buy a pair if you haven't already - you'll never regret it.

FRAYED DENIM

This season a key look for denim is the undone look. Frayed and raw edges, intentional holes (the jokes will come pouring in) cut offs in light blue hues will be your wardrobe staple for the Summer season. This trend is best paired with sophisticated pieces like tailored blazers, structures tees and your best high heeled pump.

 WHITE DENIM

Years ago white denim was frowned upon. But now a pair of white jeans MUST be on your denim rotation this year. We can’t live without them as they inject a fresh tone against all the dark colours we tend to accumulate.

If you find all white hard to master then go for a tonal look that incorporates different neutral layers.  White jeans also work perfectly with black; we pair ours with a black blazer or oversized knit.

THE NEW BOYFRIEND

We have seen a move away from loose, baggy style denim that hides your shape. This year we will see a relaxed cut in a midrise fit. It's a classic straight leg shape that always looks great, as you aren't trying too hard.
